That is why I love my X800XL PCIe Card. It works just fine with fussy software. It is 16 pipes...but it is not designed to be over clocked. That or a 6800GT.

Will an 850 be the same amount of non-fussiness? What brand do you have?

Brand on the box is ATI. Got it at Best Buy! Do not know about the 850. I just know that the X800XL is not made for much overclocking which is fine for me because I do not overclock anything. To me that means stable. On civfanatics.com we are all talking about how the new CIV4 game is giving allot of players grief. ATI & Nvidia cards have failed. High end rigs have failed. The game is broken in many ways....but it works for me....no problems with my system or video card.
Now a 6800GT is a solid card too. It is equal pretty much to the X800XL in speed. The 6800GT has pixel shader 3.0 though. It is more future proof.

It looks like the 7800GTX-512 just took back the graphics crown...
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/gra...114/index.html
The card has a redesigned 7800 core with a smaller dye process and higher gpu + memory clock rates.
The crazy part: It's already available in volume, today, and not in the realm of vapor-ware.

Nvidia had to have this card sitting around waiting till drop it on Ati as soon as there newer cards came out. Now the price on this monster, let alone 2 of them for SLI...
Ati is far from out of the race but Ati has to work on some things:
A) Paper Launches - aka new "vaporware" product launched today.
Nividia use to do this but stopped playing the virtual product releases.
B) Dual Video cards will never take off - Ati felt there was no market for this, end result, 1 year head start for Nvidia. Ati has made great strides in catching up - From need an "master card - still vaporware?" to having dual video cards with two non-master cards"
C) Dual Core cpu support - Nvidia released support in current drivers, ati saying it will have it in a few months.
Windows Vista - Found some nice sights on video cards that will run Vista when it come out.
Nvidia (FX 5200 and up) - http://www.nvidia.com/page/technology_vista_home.html
Ati (9500 and up) - http://www.ati.com/technology/windowsvista/index.html
For links for other hardware - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win.../entpguid.mspx
Mind you, if your at the low end of sys requirments, I don't see you running the new gui in all it's glory. Current on-board intel video cards run windows xp just fine too.. but for gaming now a days.

I use a ATI AIW 9800 Pro with res set to 1600x1200 x 85hz x 32bit color. The game runs fine with the typical "High" settings except when you have a large number of spell spammers (where they cast large AoE spells that have detailed graphics). I turned the quality settings down so that everything was medium quality and have not had any problems.
As for ATI not being the best brand just because it sponsors a game, that is not always true. Most of the time, if a company sponsors a game they also invest in optimizing the video drivers and the game interface to get the most out of their cards. That doesn't mean you should by a poor ATI card over a much stronger Nividia card, just that if you are stuck between two identical cards you should get the one that boast better performance for the games you play.

Agree, Final Fantasy XI was an "Best played by Nvidia" and the entire 6x drivers had texture issue . It means when it comes out, they worked closely with them to make there drivers rock when it came out.
As times go on, the other company gets there driver up to speed. A great example is Doom 3. Ati and Doom 3 were not ideal paring but this was mainly due to Ati (previous - there now fixing / fixed it) issue of poor OpenGL implementation. On the Flipside, Half-Life 2 was heavy Direct X game and Ati did better DX9 rendering at the time (9800 pro vs FX 5 series) and Ati was much better for it.
Now take Ati X series or Nvidia 7x series on those games and there near the same or run both so well that your testing the uber end of the spectrum.

Depends on your system. Most desktop systems with integrated video allow you to disable the onboard video card in the BIOS. Assuming you have a free AGP or PCIe slot, you could then drop in a faster video card.

OR...if you do not have a Dedicated Video Card slot(for Example: a Dimension 2400)...then you will have to get a regular PCI vid card. Not to be confused with a PCIe slot.

You have no dedicated video card slot. The best you can do is get a Regular PCI card. Go to Dell Community Forums under Dimension Video. There are stickys there that will let you know what is best for your Dim 3000. There is a sticky there letting you know what is avalible in video cards for your system. This question has been asked and answered many times there. We have a Dim 3000 at work. I bought it for one job...the UPS computer. Does that fine.

Quick question
I have a GeForce FX5200 running on a Dimension 2400. Ive bumped up the RAM (slightly) to 512mb. However the graphics in Guild Wars get really distorted. It looks like certain objects (hills, trees, etc) get stretched out on strange angles making it really hard to actually see whats going on. This seems to happen randomly.
Anyone got any suggestions on what I can do to stop this happening?
Thanks

Yes you can add memory. I believe you only have two slots though. Go to crucial.com and run the system scanner. It will tell you exactly what you have and what they recommend.

Hey guys,
I overclocked my nVidia GeForce 6800 Go recently, and, well, now Guild Wars has gone all to hell:
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/6400/gw0142dv.jpg
Comp specs are:
GeForce Go 256mb,
1.7Ghz,
1Gb ram,
If there's any more info you need, just mention it...
I was wondering if you could help me figure out why in the world it goes haywire. It only happens with Guildwars, no other game. (CoD2, Age of Empires 3, F.E.A.R....)

Cuz you're overclocking too much. You can never tell how it will affect games. That's definitely a problem caused by overclocking though. Probably the vertex shaders going bananas.

Heh, thanks.
I just put it back to normal instead of experimenting with it, I'll try putting it down a bit.
